Pros and Cons

An Evaluation of the Strengths and Weaknesses

For Teachers:

1.  User accessibility. The website is easily accessible and makes it easy and convenient for teachers to search and find online teacher resources and interactive worksheets.

2.  Teachers can use topic-related tasks in Liveworksheets resources designed by other teachers to reinforce topics taught.

3.  Worksheets and assignments can be created directly on pdf files or converted from MS Word or PointPoint to pdf files, so the designs can be motivating, colourful and grab the students' attention.

4. Using Liveworksheets is labour saving, as links on tasks can be embedded into Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, Moodle, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter and Whatsapp.

5. Liveworksheets is an effective formative assessment tool.  Teachers can arrange and store lessons, worksheets and assignments in workbooks that can be edited, copied and moved for repeated use.

6.  A wide array of tasks and assignments (matching, drag and drop etcetera) and exciting games (for e.g. jigsaw and listening puzzles) can be produced and marked automatically.

7. It is both user-friendly and environmentally friendly, as fewer worksheets would need to be physically prepared by teachers, with the advantage of using less paper and saving more trees.

8.  Flexibility.  Liveworksheets can be used in both online and physical classrooms for both individuals and groups and can be tailor-made for individuals or select groups in each class.

For Students:

1. It provides a more interactive learning experience and allows students to actively engage with materials in online activities.

2. It can increase student interest, motivation and engagement by making learning more dynamic and interactive.

3. Once given the links, students can complete the tasks immediately or by given due dates, using laptops, tablets or smartphones, without logging on to the website.

4. Immediate feedback on scores enables students to track their progress and identify what may be required for further improvement.

5. Students can be provided with personalised learning experiences, as worksheets can be adapted to suit individual needs and cognitive levels.

1. The allowed number of free online worksheets and workbooks.  When teachers select 'private use' for their designs, they are only allowed to create 30 worksheets. If they want to create unlimited worksheets, they have to set 'sharing mode' for their designs.  If teachers share their interactive worksheets with the entire community, they can create as many tasks or assignments as they wish.

2. Drawbacks related to video insertion.  Inserting videos can only be conducted from the YouTube platform.  This means that users would have to first upload videos onto YouTube before embedding the video link into the Liveworksheets platform.

3. Advertisements from companies and organisations are often found on the interactive worksheets of both teachers and students.  This may be distracting, particularly for the latter group.  Nevertheless, this can be easily rectified by closing the ad by clicking the 'x' at the top right-hand corner of the advertisement.

4. Liveworksheets may not provide comprehensive language learning assessment.  For example, students' pronunciation can be assessed at the segmental level, but it cannot assess language fluency in various contexts.

Comments

  1. Liveworksheets is an academic website with which I am very familiar. I would describe myself as an end user of the materials provided on this website. During the Covid pandemic I recognized the utility of this website as it offered worksheets for all age groups in the core subject areas. The diversity of the worksheets offered was also a plus. Many of them were creative and interactive and the students were very engaged in the teaching learning process.

Nichole, your assessment of the pros and cons has made me more aware of the drawbacks as I saw only the convenience of using readymade online worksheets (which were corrected online).

  2. I have used Liveworksheets on many occasions, especially during online teaching. It was easily accessible and covered content for many subjects in all age groups. The interactive nature of the worksheets was an advantage for students also. I endorse this website as well.

  3. I too have used this website and agree with the pros and cons mentioned. In spite of this, I too endorse this website.
